To sign up for a registered program, in person or online, you need a Town recreation account. You can set one up online or through Town customer service. If a program is full, you can join its waitlist.

If money is tight, the Town’s Financial Assistance Program gives qualifying Milton residents up to $200 per person each year toward recreation.

Snow help: windrow removal for 65+

A windrow is the heavy ridge of snow a plow leaves across the end of your driveway. The Town of Milton clears it for residents 65+, or with disabilities, who have no able-bodied person aged 16 or older living in the home.

For winter 2026-27, the cost is $71, and the program runs from December 1 to March 31. Crews come after snowfalls of more than 10 cm, once every road is plowed, and it can be 36 hours or more after that before your windrow is cleared. The program doesn’t plow your driveway itself.

Getting around: Milton Transit senior fares and access+

Milton Transit’s fares page (October 2026) lists these fares for seniors 65+:

  • Cash: $4.25
  • Single e-ticket in the Token Transit app: $2.55
  • 10 rides: $26
  • Monthly pass with unlimited rides: $62

The Seniors’ Activity Centre is one of the Town’s ticket agents, along with Town Hall, Milton Leisure Centre, Milton Sports Centre and Sherwood Community Centre.

If a disability makes regular buses hard to use for some or all of your trips, Milton access+ is the Town’s specialized transit service. The Town’s transit accessibility page links to access+ details on who qualifies and how to book a trip.

Milton Public Library

The Milton Public Library’s main branch is at 1010 Main St. E., inside the FirstOntario Arts Centre. There’s also a Sherwood Branch at 6355 Main St. W. and a Beaty Branch. A library card is free if you live, work or study in Milton.

Beyond books, the library lends large-print titles, Conservation Halton park passes and Cognitive Care Kits for people living with dementia, according to the HIP Halton directory (updated August 6, 2026). The main branch also serves as a cooling and warming centre.

Halton Region services for older adults

Halton Region, the upper-tier government for Milton, Burlington, Halton Hills and Oakville, runs several services with a Milton address. Its Services for older adults page (October 2026) lists:

  • Allendale, the Region’s long-term care home in Milton.
  • Martin House, assisted living with help for daily living, in Milton.
  • Milton Place and Friends Landing, two adult day programs in Milton.
  • Project Lifesaver Halton, for people who may wander.

The Region also publishes a Halton Older Adults’ Directory each year and answers questions through its 311 line. For the waiting lists and costs at Milton’s care homes, read the long-term care in Milton guide.

Ontario Health atHome in Milton

Ontario Health atHome arranges home care covered by OHIP: nursing, personal support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social work. Its care coordinators also handle every long-term care application. The Milton office is at 611 Holly Ave., Unit 203, near Holly Avenue and Main Street East.

Property tax help for Milton homeowners

The provincial grant for senior homeowners pays up to $500 a year. You must be 64 or older by the end of the previous year.

A single person gets the full grant with income up to $35,000 and nothing at $50,000 or more; for a couple, it’s $45,000 and $60,000. You claim it on your income tax return.

Halton Region’s Older Adults Property Tax Deferral lets homeowners 65+ with combined income under $69,500, who have lived in the home for at least four years, put off their property tax, interest-free. Halton By-law 22-26 removed the application fee in April 2026. The 2026 intake has closed; a new form is due in spring 2027.

The Town of Milton’s own tax page (October 2026) lists no Town seniors’ rebate. The Milton property tax guide for seniors walks through every program.

When these programs don’t cover the cost

The supports above help you stay in your Milton home. Some costs fall outside them: private home care beyond the funded visits, a main-floor bathroom or a stair lift, or bills that keep rising on a fixed income.

Once you’re 55, a reverse mortgage lets you borrow from the value of your Milton home, and no monthly mortgage payment is required. Property tax, home insurance and upkeep stay yours. Since it’s a loan and not income, you pay no tax on it, and OAS and GIS carry on unchanged.

The most you can borrow runs from about 46% of the home’s value at 55 to 60% at 78 and older. On Milton’s TRREB composite benchmark of $861,600 (September 2026), that’s about $455,000 at 70; the appraisal sets the real figure. You choose how much to take, and interest builds only on that amount.

What you owe grows with interest. Your home’s value usually grows too, and that growth stays yours.

One-time costs run about $2,000 to $3,500, including independent legal advice. The reverse mortgage cost guide breaks them down, and the Milton reverse mortgage calculator shows a range for your home. For care at home, see paying for home care in Milton; for safety changes, see home renovations for Milton seniors.

Keep in mind you’d choose between a Halton deferral and a reverse mortgage, since the reverse mortgage pays off the deferred tax when it closes.

Richard Hopkins compares every reverse mortgage lender in Canada and weighs the other routes too. You get every lender compared, and the best deal for your home and goals, by email.

If you’d rather talk, a phone or video call works too, and a family member can be included on the emails. Richard charges you nothing. His brokerage is paid by the chosen lender after the mortgage funds.

The bottom line

Milton's Seniors' Activity Centre, the Town's windrow and transit programs, Halton Region, Ontario Health atHome and the library cover a lot of what you need to stay in your home after 55. For the costs they don't cover, a reverse mortgage is one option, and Richard looks at every route so you get a recommendation based on your situation, even if it's not a reverse mortgage.

More questions on this topic

Do I have to live in Milton to join the Milton Seniors' Activity Centre?

Not as far as the Town's page says. The Town's Adults 55+ page sets membership by age, not address: $35 a year at 55 to 64, $25 at 65 to 84, and free at 85+. It doesn't spell out a residency rule for membership, so ask Town customer service when you sign up. Non-members can still drop in for $5 a visit, compared with $2.50 for members.

Can I get the windrow cleared if my adult son lives with me?

No, not if he's able-bodied. The Town's windrow removal program is for residents 65+, or with disabilities, who have no able-bodied person aged 16 or older living in the home. If you qualify, it costs $71 for the 2026-27 season, December 1 to March 31. Register online from October 19 to 23, 2026, or in person that week at Milton Leisure Centre.

Is there free transit for seniors in Milton?

Not for most seniors. Milton Transit's fares page in October 2026 lists senior (65+) fares: $4.25 cash, $2.55 for a single e-ticket through the Token Transit app, $26 for 10 rides and $62 for a monthly pass. If your income is low, the Subsidized Passes for Low Income Transit (SPLIT) program can cover the full cost, and riders with a CNIB card ride free. If a disability makes regular buses hard to use for some trips, you can apply for Milton access+ specialized transit.

Does Milton have its own seniors' property tax rebate?

No. The Town of Milton's Tax Rebates and Deferrals page, checked October 16, 2026, lists no Town seniors' rebate. What it lists for older homeowners are two Halton Region deferral programs and provincial credits, including Ontario's Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant of up to $500 a year. The Milton property tax guide covers each one.
