October 19 to 23: sign up for windrow removal
The Town of Milton clears the windrow, the heavy ridge of snow a plow leaves across the end of your driveway. You can register online from 8 a.m. Monday, October 19, to 4 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2026. You can also sign up in person that week, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Milton Leisure Centre.
The season costs $71 and runs December 1 to March 31. Crews come after snowfalls over 10 cm, once every road is plowed, and it can be 36 hours or more after that before your windrow is cleared. It clears the end of the driveway only, not the whole driveway.
You qualify if you’re 65 or older, or living with a disability, and nobody able-bodied aged 16 or older lives with you (Town of Milton, October 2026).
Property tax: 2026 is paid, 2027 starts in February
All four 2026 instalments are now past. The Town of Milton’s due dates were February 27, April 30, June 30 and September 29, 2026. If one was missed, the Town adds 1.25% on the first day it’s late and another 1.25% on the first day of each month after that.
The next bill is the 2027 interim, issued at the end of February. The Town’s pattern is the last business day of February, but it hasn’t published the exact 2027 date yet. If paying in lump sums is hard, the Town offers pre-authorized monthly, semi-monthly or instalment plans.
Halton’s older-adult tax deferral: next intake in spring 2027
Halton Region lets homeowners 65 and older put off their whole property tax bill, interest-free, if the owners’ combined income is under $69,500 and one owner has lived in the home for the last four years. As of 2026 there is no application fee: Halton By-law 22-26, passed in April 2026, removed it.
The 2026 intake has closed. Halton says a new application form will be available in spring 2027. Milton homeowners apply through Town Hall at 150 Mary Street, and people already in the program renew by September 30 each year.
You can use a tax deferral or a reverse mortgage, not both. If you later set up a reverse mortgage, any deferred tax is paid off at that point. Property tax help for Milton seniors compares the two.
Spring 2027: Ontario’s grant, on your tax return
The Ontario grant for senior homeowners is worth as much as $500 a year. You claim it on your income tax return: the 2026 return you file in spring 2027 claims the grant for the property tax you paid in 2026.
You need to be 64 or older by the end of the previous year. A single senior gets the full grant on income up to $35,000 and nothing at $50,000 or more.
A couple gets the full grant up to $45,000 and nothing at $60,000 or more. Only one grant is paid per couple (Government of Ontario, page updated January 2, 2026).
Other changes worth knowing
Year-end renovations. The federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit covers up to $20,000 of eligible work a year for a homeowner 65 or older. At the 14% rate for 2026, that’s a credit of up to $2,800 (Canada Revenue Agency; Department of Finance, June 2026). Work done and goods bought by December 31 count on your 2026 return. Renovations for Milton seniors explains what qualifies.
Heritage register, January 2027. The Town of Milton says its register will hold only designated properties from January 2027, so more than 900 listed properties will be removed. The Town is encouraging owners to consider designating voluntarily.
Long-term care costs. Ontario’s monthly co-payments changed on July 1, 2026, to $2,129.17 for a basic room, $2,567.17 for semi-private and $3,041.97 for private. Long-term care in Milton covers Milton’s homes and wait lists.
You can ask for an estimate any month
None of these dates affects when you can look at a reverse mortgage. You can ask for an estimate in October, February or any other month, and it doesn’t affect your credit.
If property tax or winter costs are the worry, a reverse mortgage is one option among several. There are no required monthly mortgage payments, while property tax, home insurance and upkeep stay yours.
You get a recommendation based on your situation, even if it’s not a reverse mortgage. Try the Milton reverse mortgage calculator for a first figure.
